I often reflect of the idea that we are surrounded by death, but for many, they are oblivious of the fact.
For many, they go about their lives, focused on fulfilling their own desires with no regard to the evil that they are perpetuating through their neglect to identify it, and even worse, fuel it.
They have become a slave to their insatiable thirst for self pleasure and although they feel that it brings them joy, interiorly they are dying.
I think of the cry of the holy Bishop Martin of Tours:
"Who, in the face of captivity, can think of the circus? who can go to his own execution, laughing merrily? We are living in the fear of slavery, but we go on playacting; we are threatened with death, but all we think of is amusement. One would think that all the people of Rome had eaten Sardinian herbs... dying and laughing at the same time."
