Icons (Iconography)

The Seminary Church (Mount Angel, Oregon)

The front of the church, the altar and the area for the monks.

The special area for the monks where they worship, pray, chant and sing.

Iconography is the branch of art history which studies the identification, description, and the interpretation of the content of images. The word iconography literally means "image writing."

The following Icons were displayed in the church at the Mount Angel Seminary. They were written by one of the monks in residence there.

(Sorry I forgot his name - however, I am sure he doesn't mind,
Monks don't usually care about such things)

Jesus

Beautiful Gold leaf

Doesn't this icon just draw you in.

The picture doesn't do this icon justice.

A little blurry, sorry.

What a wonderful prayer area.

In each icon there is such symbolism that it takes deep study and reflection to grasp the truth and holiness of each icon. Icons are not painted, but rather they are prayed over and written.
