The church bells at "Mount Angel Seminary" in Oregon
It wasn't so long ago that the life of a small town functioned around the ringing of the church bells. You would know what time it was by the rhythmic ringing of the bells. It wasn't only a clock for the town, but also a connection with the spiritual life and God. When the sound of the bells echoed, it was a marker for the time, but also a reminder of who we were, who we actually worked for (God), and offered a reminder to our connection with our faith and creator.
When the church bell was replaced by the whistle, the connection was severed.
In communist countries it actually was a systematic tool in the quest for Communist indoctrination to confiscate all the church bells from the towns and villages. Once the bells were gone, it was easier to pull the people away from their connection to God and their faith.
Can you imagine what our life and world would be like if our day functioned around the ringing of the town church bells?
